the importance of

skin cancer screenings

Routine skin cancer screenings are essential, especially for those with a history of sun exposure or a personal or family history of skin cancer. We perform thorough skin cancer screenings, examining your skin for any changes or unusual spots that could indicate a risk. Early detection allows for prompt, effective treatment, increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome. Prioritizing regular screenings is a proactive step toward maintaining your skin health and overall well-being.

Why Mohs Surgery is Important for Certain Skin Cancers

Mohs surgery is often recommended for skin cancers that:

Are in cosmetically sensitive areas (like the face) where minimizing scarring and maintaining function are essential.

Have irregular borders or are large, making it harder to define the extent of the cancer by sight alone.

Are more likely to recur, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

How Mohs Surgery Works

Removing a small layer

The Mohs surgeon removes a thin layer of skin from the visible cancer site. This tissue is immediately prepared for microscopic examination in our on-site lab.

Microscopic Examination

The removed tissue is examined under a microscope to check for cancer cells at the edges (or “margins”). This is a critical step, as it helps the surgeon see exactly where any remaining cancer cells are located.

Targeted Removal of Remaining Cancer

If any cancer is seen at the margins, the surgeon will remove another very thin layer only from the areas where cancer cells were found. This approach is repeated layer by layer, focusing only on areas with cancer, until all cancerous cells are gone. By targeting just the affected areas, Mohs surgery preserves as much healthy skin as possible.

Reconstruction (If Needed)

Once all cancer is removed, the Mohs surgeon will often perform reconstructive surgery right away to ensure the best cosmetic outcome, especially for areas like the face where both appearance and function are incredibly important.
