Years of cumulative ultraviolet exposure can cause more than brown spots and wrinkles. It can also contribute to actinic keratoses (AKs) — rough or scaly precancerous lesions that develop on chronically sun-exposed skin.

Cosmetic laser resurfacing is not a substitute for the diagnosis or established treatment of precancerous lesions, and it does not eliminate the risk of developing skin cancer. If we identify suspicious or precancerous changes, we can determine whether they require medical evaluation or a separate treatment plan.

Scars can be noticeable for very different reasons. When a scar is widened, poorly positioned, tethered, contracted, or distorts surrounding anatomy, surgical scar revision with Dr. Wall may be the more appropriate starting point. When texture or surface irregularity contributes to the scar's appearance, laser resurfacing may be considered — and some scars benefit from a staged combination of both.
Not every scar needs surgery. Not every scar needs laser. The scar determines the plan.

Yes. Our resurfacing technology includes fractional CO₂ resurfacing as well as 1570 nm non-ablative fractional resurfacing. These technologies can be customized and used independently or together.
It depends on your treatment. A lighter non-ablative treatment generally has a different recovery profile than more intensive fractional CO₂ or combination resurfacing. We'll discuss your anticipated recovery before treatment.
Laser resurfacing can improve visible signs of photodamage such as appropriate pigmentation, rough texture, fine lines, and uneven tone. It does not, however, erase your history of ultraviolet exposure or eliminate your future risk of skin cancer.
Ablative fractional lasers have been studied for actinic keratoses and field cancerization, and clinical studies have demonstrated improved AK clearance with certain laser-assisted treatment protocols. That does not mean routine cosmetic laser resurfacing should be considered a substitute for diagnosing or treating actinic keratoses or skin cancer. If precancerous changes are present, we'll recommend an appropriate medical treatment plan.
Yes, certain scars may benefit — particularly when texture or surface irregularity contributes to their appearance. Structural scar concerns may be better suited to surgical scar revision with Dr. Wall.
It depends on the concern, treatment intensity, and desired outcome. Some patients may choose a more comprehensive treatment, while others may benefit from a series of lighter treatments.
